Should I be Concerned…
What is Radon?
Radon is a radioactive gas. You can’t see, taste, or smell Radon, but it may be a problem in your home. Radon comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all soils. It typically moves up through the ground to the air above and into your home through cracks and other holes in the foundation. Your home traps Radon inside, where it can build up. Any home may have a Radon problem. This means new and older homes, well-sealed as well as drafty homes, and both homes with and without basements. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, an estimated 40% of the homes in Pennsylvania are believed to have elevated radon levels.
The Risks of
Living with Radon
Radon gas decays into radioactive particles that can get trapped in your lungs when you breathe. As they break down further, these particles release small bursts of energy. This can damage lung tissue and lead to lung cancer over the course of your lifetime. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer next to smoking. Your chances of getting lung cancer from radon depend mostly on: How much radon is in your home, The amount of time you spend in your home, and Whether you are a smoker or have ever smoked. Testing is the only way to know if you and your family are at risk from Radon.
Staying Safe
Testing for Radon
Pennsylvania law requires that all third-party persons performing Radon testing be certified. Radon gas measurement is easy and can be done even while someone is in the home. A typical short-term test can be done in as little as 48 hours. Armored Home Inspections, LLC will conduct a short-term test utilizing a Continuous Radon Monitor (CRM) and provide you with an accurate reading of the Radon level for the lowest level suitable for occupancy.
Fixing a
Radon Problem
There are simple ways to fix a Radon problem that aren’t too costly. Even very high levels can be reduced to acceptable levels. Most homes can be fixed for about the same cost as other common home repairs.
In addition to Radon testing, Armored Home Inspections, LLC can provide a full range of home inspection services associated with real estate transactions. One call does it all.
