Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos was previously used in many building applications, but was banned from use in residential dwellings in the late 1970s, early 1980s.  Asbestos fibers are heat-resistant rendering them very useful in many industrial applications.  Because of their durability, asbestos fibers that get into lung tissue will remain for long periods of time.  Many homes and commercial buildings still contain this known carcinogen.  Asbestos is still found today in flooring tiles, heating pipe insulation, attic insulation, suspended ceiling tiles, textured popcorn ceilings, heating/boilers, exterior siding, and more.

Health Risks

Inhalation of asbestos fibers suspended in the air can result in lung diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer.  Armored home inspectors are trained to recognize known asbestos containing material, and when found will recommend testing for further laboratory analysis to confirm the type of asbestos fibers present.

Asbestos in the Home

Should asbestos be present in your home, removal of asbestos may be warranted.  This removal process, called abatement, can be an expensive process.  This is why many savvy buyers will pay a small fee to confirm if the suspected material in the home is in fact containing asbestos.  Once confirmed, abatement is recommended which can affect the sale price or even the value of the home.
